717 Building Structures Workshop

1st year of Master’s Degree in Architecture
4 ECTSCompulsory course

Description

The course focuses on the drafting of the partial execution project for structures, which is developed throughout the course and culminates in the Master’s Thesis. This project is defined as the Basic Project after completing the subject Workshop of Projects II, which is a necessary condition to develop the corresponding calculations and plans for the structure.

The course is structured as a workshop where theoretical aspects are oriented towards practical application, with most of the workload dedicated to correcting assignments and providing tutoring.

Course content

The course follows a sequential scheme associated with the personal work development of the students.

Week 1. Identification, definition, and modeling of the project and the adopted solutions. Identification and schematic “tracing” of the necessary “trajectories” of forces for equilibrium. Determination of global equilibria, reference regulations, and loads and materials.

Weeks 2 to 4. Preliminary sizing of the horizontal and vertical structure, including connections. This part of the work includes geometric definition, numerical modeling, and analysis and verification of the different elements of the structure.

Week 5. Explanatory presentation of the adopted solution and its suitability.

Weeks 6 and 7. Drawing of execution plans, drafting of the report, and preparation of calculation appendices.
