1805 Experimental Workshop 2: Digital design and fabrication of timber structures

4th year of Degree in Foundations of Architecture
6 ECTSCompulsory diversifiable course

Description and objectives

In the workshop, the design and construction of a full-scale laminated wood structure is carried out using parametric design tools and digital fabrication techniques. A successive approach is taken to address the various problems posed through the development of different prototypes at various scales. Basic knowledge of Grasshopper is required.

The objectives of this workshop are:

  • To understand the advantages and limitations of commercial wood products for structural use and the industrial capabilities available for the robotic fabrication of wood structures.
  • To reinforce and expand prior knowledge of structures and geometry.
  • To comprehend the geometric, constructive, and structural implications of the design decisions made in the project of complex geometry wood structures.

Course content

  • Wood as a structural material. Linear and surface products. Commercial dimensions and mechanical properties.
  • Complex geometries in wooden structures. Bending of wooden elements for structural use. Geometric, constructive, and structural implications.
  • Manufacturing by numerical control (CNC) in wooden structures.
  • Carpentry joints using CNC.
  • Laminated wood structures. Construction systems.
