1st year of Master’s Degree in Architecture
4 ECTS – Elective course
Description
The subject aims for students to acquire a solid practical, theoretical, and conceptual foundation in the training of future architects. To achieve this, a workshop is proposed, which is an eminently practical course where students must review and keep in mind the knowledge acquired in the undergraduate structural courses. Most of the course will require students to have a computer for class exercises and a more developed practical project.
Course content
Topic 1. Introduction
- Brief review of structural typologies in relation to architectural projects.
- Initial hypotheses and modeling criteria.
- Available finite element tools, and the application of spreadsheets for structural calculations.
- Basic elements of a structural model: node, element, degree of freedom, etc. Practice through simple introductory exercises.
Topic 2. Analysis
- Development of practical exercises for structural analysis of different typologies.
- Critical evaluation and interpretation of output data from structural analysis programs.
Topic 3. Design and verification of sections
- Regulatory checks to be performed according to the type of element.
- Support tools for sizing and verification of elements.
Topic 4. Towards design and optimization
- Available tools for optimization and parametric design.
- Preliminary data for pre-sizing to be introduced in the analysis.
