Structural modeling, monitoring and diagnostics
Modeling and analysis of masonry structures
Evaluation using reduced-scale models of masonry arches and vaults, aiming to accurately replicate their real behavior under different loading conditions. Development of low-cost monitoring protocols (open-source hardware, photogrammetry). Application of limit analysis and the Discrete Element Method (DEM) to study the behavior of masonry walls under settlements, along with the creation of digital twins of these structural systems for real-time monitoring.

Damage detection and structural pathology
Detection and monitoring of damage in historical structures as well as in recent, singular structures. Use of point clouds for displacement and crack monitoring. Development of open-source software tools for damage classification. Identification of structural mechanisms and collapse risk in historic structures.
DEFE Researchers: David Mencías, Paula Villanueva and María Rodríguez.

Rehabilitation and intervention in existing structures
Consolidation and repair of structures
Research and development of consolidation and repair techniques for historical and contemporary structures, including masonry and reinforced concrete. Stitching of masonry, high-performance and durable mortars for reinforced concrete, etc. Exploration of excavation techniques beneath existing buildings, with damage mitigation and monitoring.
DEFE Researchers: Paula Villanueva and David Mencías.

Structural strengthening with advanced materials
Experimental and numerical research on advanced composite materials, FRP (Fiber Reinforced Polymers) and FRCM (Fiber-Reinforced Cementitious Matrix), for the strengthening of concrete, masonry, and timber structures. In particular, the use of adhesives, anchorage systems, and specialized mortars for carbon fiber to improve interface properties and optimize fiber utilization.
